Dr. Shashijant Upadhye – NPTEL STAR
Not every success story begins with a strong academic foundation. Some begin with setbacks that quietly shape a person’s determination. For Dr. Shashikant Sudarshan Upadhye, one such moment came early in life when he failed his 12th standard exams – an experience that could have defined his limits, but instead became the starting point of a journey shaped by persistence.
Today, Dr. Upadhye serves as the Head of the “Diploma in Pharmacy” Department at Annasaheb Dange College of B. Pharmacy, Ashta, Maharashtra, with over 13 years of teaching experience. Over time, he has also built a multifaceted identity – as a trainer, educator, and lifelong learner – but he credits much of this transformation to his association with NPTEL.
Although he first came across NPTEL in 2018, he began engaging with the platform seriously in 2020 during his PhD. Initially enrolling to fulfill an academic requirement, he soon found himself deeply drawn to the structured nature of the courses. Weekly assignments, lecture videos, and strict timelines instilled in him a sense of consistency that became central to his routine.
What followed was not a one-time effort but a sustained commitment to learning. Dr. Upadhye went on to complete 27 NPTEL courses, earning 5 gold and 4 silver certifications, securing a course topper position, and even achieving a perfect score in one of the courses. His consistent performance led to him being recognized multiple times as an NPTEL Star across categories such as Believer, Enthusiast, Discipline Star, and Motivated Learner, eventually culminating in him becoming an NPTEL Champion. Notably, he is the first learner from the Pharmacy discipline in India to achieve this recognition.
For Dr. Upadhye, however, the true impact of NPTEL extends beyond certifications. He describes the platform as a “silent mentor” that guided him without expecting anything in return. Instead of limiting himself to Pharmacy, he explored courses in Psychology, Leadership, Communication, and Educational Technology; using the knowledge gained to refine his teaching methods.
This shift became most visible in his classroom. Believing that a teacher must lead by example, he began enrolling in NPTEL courses alongside his students. He introduced a blended learning approach, where students engaged with lecture content independently, and used classroom time for discussion and application. This improved participation and built confidence among students, many of whom successfully completed their courses under his guidance.
But this journey was not without its challenges. From managing overlapping university and NPTEL exam schedules to traveling long distances to exam centres, sometimes over 100 kilometers in a day, he balanced time and responsibilities. At the same time, he managed professional commitments and personal responsibilities, including caring for his young child as well. Yet, he viewed these not as obstacles, but as part of the learning process itself.
Interestingly, his efforts were not always understood by those around him. While many appreciated his achievements, some questioned the value of taking multiple courses. For Dr. Upadhye, the answer has always been clear: learning is not about immediate returns. He believes that knowledge cannot be measured in monetary terms – its real value lies in application and sharing.
Beyond his own growth, he has actively worked to inspire both students and fellow educators. Dr. Upadhye has conducted numerous faculty and student development programs across Maharashtra and guided learners through every stage of their NPTEL journey – from enrollment to certification. His efforts have created a ripple effect, encouraging learners to explore courses beyond their core disciplines.
At the heart of his journey is a simple belief: consistency can take you further than talent alone. Through years of disciplined effort, Dr. Shashikant Upadhye has transformed his path and helped others discover the value of continuous learning. From an early academic setback to a nationally recognized NPTEL Champion, his story stands as a reminder that growth is always possible, for those willing to keep going.
