Can a seasoned professional with decades of experience in nuclear engineering and software project management discover new avenues for learning? For Ravi Suryadevara, an accomplished scientist and quality systems consultant, the answer is a definitive yes. His experience with NPTEL serves as a compelling testament to the idea that learning is lifelong, transcending age, career stage, and previous achievements.
It took him from reactor halls to machine learning notebooks.
After graduating in Mechanical Engineering, he trained in Nuclear Engineering at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay (BARC) and worked for fifteen years as a senior scientist and engineer at the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited. He then transitioned to Software Engineering and project management at a technology firm in Hyderabad, trading reactor schematics for software architecture diagrams. Today, he consults for software organizations implementing CMMI, a framework for assessing and improving development processes. Despite his extensive expertise, he harbored an innate desire to understand recent developments in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. This curiosity led him to NPTEL.
He quickly discovered that NPTEL offers world-class, “IIT-quality” education accessible to anyone with a passion for learning. The modular, week-by-week structure allowed him to balance his consulting work with his studies. A typical week involves listening to modularized video lectures, downloading course materials, taking notes by hand, and methodically tackling assignments. When faced with difficult concepts or work pressures, he leverages NPTEL’s collaborative ecosystem. He actively attends live interactive sessions hosted by teaching assistants, where students can review complex topics, solve problems, and ask questions that may require further discussion beyond a recorded lecture. For him, getting an assignment question wrong is not a failure but a vital part of the learning process. “If you find something difficult, it means it’s a situation to learn,” he explains, treating every wrong answer as data rather than defeat.
Among the many courses he has completed, including Deep Learning and Mathematical Foundations for Machine Learning, the one closest to his heart is Machine Learning for Science and Engineering Applications. He is fascinated by how mathematical models can provide novel approaches to predicting and solving complex, real-world problems – an approach rooted in the same instinct he once brought to nuclear engineering. His goals extend far beyond earning certifications. Armed with his technical knowledge and insights from a Business Fundamentals for Entrepreneurs course from IIT Bombay, he plans to develop products addressing critical societal needs. He envisions using AI to devise warning systems that prevent road and rail accidents, improve healthcare diagnostics, reduce waste, and maximize solar energy utilisation, applications where accuracy can save lives.
He is a passionate advocate for NPTEL, encouraging young job-seekers to invest their time in these courses rather than wait for the perfect job to teach them. He believes NPTEL is a monumental innovation in education, democratizing access to premier institutions like the IITs at zero cost, a privilege absent from his own early training. For him, the ultimate lesson is about setting high standards.
“Always aim high,” he advises. “If you aim for 100, you may reach 95.”
His journey is an inspiring reminder that with passion and willingness to put in the effort, there are truly no limits to what we can learn.
