Yet, once having left for school, college and further, we hardly ever return to it. Children come back from school whining about ‘homework’; once you’re home, you’ve successfully escaped the heavy books and confusing information. But, when K Radha Rao decided to return to learning, after a hiatus of almost thirteen years from formal education, it was her home where her passion was rekindled.

She had graduated in 1993, finishing her postgraduation in 2007, and moving to Mumbai after marriage. It was here, when stuck in her house during the pandemic, that her brother suggested an outlet for her curious mind: NPTEL. Since then, she has never looked back: armed with 20 completed courses and 8 ongoing, she was certified as an NPTEL Believer, and Discipline Star.

A whole new spectrum of possibilities opened up to Mrs. Rao with her first step. Education had changed by leaps and bounds, but she was enthusiastic to catch up. Her husband kept her enriching company: both would listen to lectures and prepare for assignments together, each becoming a motivation for the other, a reason to keep going on – a helping hand to walk forward into unfamiliar terrains. It was here that she chanced upon a newfound love: Humanities and Social Sciences. She enthusiastically spoke about having taken multiple courses in the domain, with Professor Aysha Viswamohan being her favourite instructor. She eagerly said how she’s taken up every one of Professor Viswamohan’s courses except ‘American Literature’- which she looks forward to taking up in the future. ‘Film Appreciation’ is a course which remains close to her heart. She reveals her love for films, and how particularly it helped her see Indian Cinema once again, in a vividly new light.

Mrs. Rao does not wish to stop learning, and she believes that she has found the place which grants her wish.

NPTEL allows her to learn at her own pace and at an affordable cost, offering courses whose depth and breadth she finds difficult to match elsewhere.

Learning is endless, and she happily recognises it to be so, for now she can learn from the comfort of her own home, whilst going about her daily work, in the familiar company of her husband. Acquiring knowledge in itself is her solace, which keeps her shifting across several domains and topics. She is currently returning to Marketing Management, an area she bade adieu to in her postgraduation years. She was utterly delighted on being awarded as a Discipline Star, for it had been a long time since she had received recognition for this relentless pursuit of hers. She followed her husband in close succession in receiving the same award, expanding her joy further. Both have also received recognition as Motivated Learners – again, in consecutive years – demonstrating the value of inspiring companionship in our lives.

Interactions with NPTEL Stars are also something she is fond of, for this meeting of like minds helps initiate more knowledge through new connections and greater encouragement.

This sharing of knowledge which NPTEL enables, breaking down all barriers of space, age, and time, is what learning stands for, and has always stood for.

In the humdrum of this age which speedily runs by, Mrs. Rao stays grounded by her own pace, surrounded by love, warmth, and curiosity. She says NPTEL is greatly beneficial for the children of today, and holds a childlike joy to return to learning, alongside them.

~written by Eshani Bhattacharjee

K Radha Rao Home – the first place of learning for most of us.
