Not many chase distilled knowledge itself, and Chandra Sekhar K fell directly into the latter bucket. Being an Assistant Professor in Raghu Institute of Technology, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), he has over twelve years of teaching experience across domains such as VLSI, Communications Systems, Instrumentation, Signal Processing and more. He was no stranger to learning, nor to the process of it, but NPTEL would impress him all the same. He was first exposed to NPTEL through his Local Chapter, which recommended that he explore the courses as part of the requirements for his PhD from JNU, Kakinada. Upon careful examination and being thoroughly impressed by the course structure and the assignment architecture, he delved into them.

He was further impressed by the quality of pedagogy, which became one of his reasons to further his pursuit.

His method of approaching these courses was quite simple: search, learn, analyze and practice applications of the concepts taught. Sometimes, he would discuss and compare the curricula. This learning process helped him retain more of what he learnt instead of simply forgetting it after the exam. Since 2018, he has taken 17 courses to date and the most interesting to him were “Industrial IoT” and “Internet of Things” by Sudip K. Mishra. The material of these courses alongside the manner in which they were explained was very interesting and were analogous with real time applications and interdisciplinary areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

This structured nature of the courses also influenced his personal life, leading him to lead a more structured life and even his own form of teaching, wherein he has begun to use more illustrative and real time examples. He is still very interested in other domains such as Computer Science, and in that aspect, the certifications matter less than the knowledge he has gained.

He believes that certifications, medals and other nominations will come and go, what will inevitably stick is the knowledge amassed, which should be the metric to be used.

He has also pushed others to explore NPTEL as well, such as during his mentorship of the course “VLSI Design: RTL to GDS”, he insisted on a batch of 30 students who were working alongside him to take courses and broaden their knowledge. This not only bolstered their team work but also made them work better and due to the increased interest, some of his students went on to score very good grades.

Currently, he is looking forward to exploring more courses all the while continuing his PhD. In his own words, he is glad that students are already mandated to take NPTEL courses for things like activity points and credits, which act as a reward-incentive to get them started with the courses and nurture interest. He believes that the courses offer deep knowledge and have excellent structure and even if someone were to take them for the rewards, they would be bound to be piqued with interest. And that would be the start of a new, broader learning journey.

~written by Krishneal Dutta

Chandra Sekhar K Many people fall into the loop of chasing numbers for the sake of watching them grow.
