Dr. Krushnasamy Subramaniyan, an Associate Professor in the Department of Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering at Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering, understands this better than anyone. With over 20 years of teaching experience, his journey is a testament to the power of continuous learning, fueled significantly by NPTEL.

Dr. Subramaniyan’s NPTEL journey began in 2009 out of sheer curiosity. Initially, he enrolled in a Linear Control Systems course to refresh the concepts he was teaching his students. What started as a simple refresher, though, soon stuck for good.

“The quality of lectures, assignments, and assessments motivated me to continue,” he recalls.

The platform offered a structured and affordable way to learn directly from IIT faculty, with content that went beyond the standard institute curriculum. Managing a demanding schedule as an Associate Professor, with two hours of theory and two hours of lab work daily, leaves little room for extra pursuits.

“Even though time is not available, I will steal some from my regular schedule,” he says.

He dedicates one to two hours every day to his NPTEL courses, often waking early or studying late into the night. His meticulous approach involves downloading videos and gathering materials weeks before a course even begins, ensuring he is fully prepared.

That habit of learning eventually led to an unexpected shift in his interests. A control engineer by trade, Dr. Subramaniyan found himself drawn to the aerospace industry after a student’s project piqued his interest. He enrolled in a newly introduced course on drone systems and control from IISc. “It is totally a new area for me,” he explains. The course, which focused on the application of control systems in the aerospace and defense sectors, was a revelation. It moved chronologically from theoretical concepts to practical drone technology applications, completely reshaping his professional trajectory. He has since completed around six courses in the aerospace domain.

Beyond his own learning, Dr. Subramaniyan is a strong advocate for NPTEL among his students. At Karnataka’s Visvesvaraya Technological University, completing at least one NPTEL course is mandatory, and he actively recommends courses that bridge the gap between the curriculum and rapid technological change. “The real benefit is knowledge,” he advises his students. “Choose the courses that genuinely interest you… and focus on learning rather than just certifications.”

For Dr. Subramaniyan, the numerous stars and credentials he has earned are secondary. The true reward lies in the satisfaction of learning and bringing that knowledge back to his students. Looking ahead, he is considering a second PhD or even starting a drone manufacturing company.

~written by Elsa Prasad

Krushnasamy Subramaniyan As technology evolves, adaptability becomes essential, especially for educators, for whom keeping up is not an option but a necessity.
