As an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at Bharathiyar Institute of Engineering for Women, Deviyakurichi, in Salem, she sees continuous learning as an essential part of her work. Her NPTEL journey was aimed to update her knowledge and explore areas of interest beyond her regular academic responsibilities. Eventually, that intention grew into a lasting learning habit.

NPTEL offered her a way to pursue professional growth alongside her responsibilities as an educator. The flexibility of online learning made room for independent study, while lectures delivered by IIT professors provided opportunities to engage with concepts beyond the regular curriculum. Structured assignments gave that flexibility a sense of direction, encouraging her to remain consistent rather than let the initial enthusiasm fade.

As she continued taking courses, the experience became about more than just updating her existing knowledge. Each course introduced new concepts, emerging technologies, and perspectives that widened her understanding. She found value in stepping beyond the boundaries of her routine academic work and making space for subjects that encouraged further exploration. That learning also carried into her teaching. Sowmiya credits NPTEL with strengthening her technical knowledge and enriching her teaching practices. For her, these are not separate outcomes. Continuing to build her own understanding contributes to her development as an educator, giving her more knowledge to draw upon in her work with students.

Gradually, NPTEL became part of her routine rather than an occasional addition to it. Completing each course brought the satisfaction of following through on a commitment, while every new subject offered another reason to remain curious.

Earning the Elite Badge was a proud milestone in that journey. Recognition as an NPTEL Motivated Learner and an NPTEL Believer added further encouragement, strengthening her enthusiasm to continue.

These achievements mattered to her not simply as credentials, but as acknowledgements of the effort she had invested in her learning.

One of the most rewarding parts of her experience has been encouraging colleagues and students to explore NPTEL for themselves. Her own journey gives her reasons to recommend it: the satisfaction of discovering new ideas, completing courses, and finding renewed motivation to learn. Sharing that experience allows her to extend its value beyond her own development.

There is a connection between the way Sowmiya approaches her learning and what she hopes to encourage in others. She is not asking others to remain curious while treating her own education as complete. Instead, she continues to make room for learning herself. That commitment gives substance to her belief that educators can inspire growth by demonstrating it.

For Sowmiya, learning is not a stage to finish before moving on to teaching. It is an ongoing part of being an educator. Looking ahead, she hopes to pursue NPTEL courses with the same curiosity, commitment, and enthusiasm that have sustained her so far.

As she puts it, “When educators continue to learn, they inspire others to learn, grow, and achieve more.”

~written by Khadija Hussain

Sowmiya M For Sowmiya M, being a teacher has never meant leaving the role of a learner behind.
