A third-year B.Tech student in Electronics and Communication Engineering at ACE Engineering College, Roman was interested in programming but unsure how to build his skills.

When even writing a simple “Hello, World” program felt difficult, he turned to YouTube for structured guidance. That search led him to NPTEL.

In the second semester, Roman enrolled in ‘Problem Solving through Programming in C’, offered by IIT Kharagpur, and ‘Programming, Data Structures and Algorithms using Python’, offered by IIT Madras. He earned an Elite certificate in the C programming course.

.The organised lectures helped him understand concepts step by step, while the assignments encouraged him to apply what he had learned. Balancing the courses with college required commitment, so he made time to study in the college library after classes. Gradually, he built a foundation that helped him continue learning independently.

As his understanding grew, Roman began spending more time solving coding problems and testing his knowledge across different platforms. Over time, he solved around 3,000 problems and participated in nearly 100 coding contests. His consistency is also reflected in a coding streak of over 500 days, demonstrating the discipline he has maintained in practising and improving his skills. These experiences helped him become more comfortable approaching unfamiliar questions and breaking complex problems into manageable steps. Every problem solved became an opportunity to strengthen his confidence and learn something new.

The impact of that foundation soon extended beyond his own learning. During his second year, after sharing his learning journey on LinkedIn, Roman secured an opportunity as a coding instructor at Codapt LLP. For six months, he prepared lectures and taught coding problems from previous years of the TCS National Qualifier Test (NQT) to fourth-year students.

Standing in front of senior students and teaching them became a defining moment. “It was the best moment of my life,” he recalled. The experience helped him discover how much he enjoyed explaining concepts and making problem-solving easier for others. Teaching also gave him a different perspective on the learning process. Concepts that he had worked hard to understand became lessons he could explain to someone else. Preparing lectures required him to organise his thoughts and approach problems from a learner’s point of view.

His journey had come full circle in an unexpected way: the student who once searched for help with his first program was now helping others become more confident in coding.

Looking ahead, he plans to explore Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning through NPTEL. Although he has completed only two courses, they gave him a foundation that reached far beyond the syllabus.

Roman’s journey is a reminder that the value of learning cannot be measured by the number of courses completed. Sometimes, the right beginning can build the confidence to pursue new opportunities, discover an unexpected passion, and help others find their own way forward.

~written by Sania K J

Md Roman Awais Every learner needs a starting point, and for Mohammed Roman Awais, it was the search for a clearer way to understand coding.
